Makar Sankranti marks the end of winter, when the sun moves into the northern hemisphere- thus symbolising regeneration and the start of a new period. Besides being a significant date in the zodiac, Makar Sankranti is also a harvest festival and is celebrated throughout the region as the end of one agrarian cycle.Traditionally, Makar Sankranti is observed by a ritual bath- in Uttar Pradesh, in fact, there’s a local belief that anybody who doesn't bathe on Makar Sankranti will end up being born a donkey in his or her next incarnation! The sacred 'sangam' at Allahabad- the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna- is especially an important place for ritual baths, and is the venue for a local fair. All across North and West India, flying kites and feasting on rice and sweets made from sesame seeds is an integral part of the festivities.In western India Gujarat and Maharashtra Makar Sankranti is celebrated by flying colourful kites and kite competitions

CES 2012: Intel announces first smartphones with Lenovo and Motorola

The long-awaited confirmation of Intel’s first mobile phones came at CES, as Lenovo and Motorola confirmed they were working with the chipmaker.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0

Samsung announced the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, back in October and today it has finally arrived in India under the alias, the Tab 620. The new 7-inch tablet is a sort of an overhaul of the original Galaxy Tab P1000. The tablet is currently available in certain retail stores and across online stores like Flipkart for Rs. 26,499.

While it may share the same screen size as its predecessor, a lot has changed under the hood. It’s a lot slimmer and lighter at 345g. The tablet features the new PLS LCD touchscreen. Instead of Gingerbread, we now get Honeycomb 3.2 out-of-the-box with a promise for ICS later on. Currently only the 16GB model is available in India, but unlike its elder siblings, the Tab 750 and 730, you can expand the memory by 32GB via microSD card. It also features HSPA+ and dual-band Wi-Fi with Wi-Fi Direct. It retains the 3.15MP camera, but it’s now capable of 720p recording. Despite being slimmer, they’ve managed to keep the same battery capacity. Finally, powering the Tab 620 is the Exynos chipset from the Galaxy S II, which gives it two cores and much faster GPU.

Surya to host Tamil version of KBC

Chennai: Tamil superstar Surya is all set to don the hat of quizmaster for the Tamil version of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’. Titled as ‘Neengalum Vellalam Oru Kodi’, the show will go on air from mid Januray 2012.
According to sources, the show will kick start around Pongal and questions for the qualifying rounds will start airing soon. The Hindi version of the show had catapulted Amitabh Bachchan to a superstar status and had given him a new lease in his professional front.

Ever since the first season, the show has been adapted on different regional channels. Shah Rukh Khan had hosted the second season while Saurav Ganguly and Shatrughan Sinha hosted the Bengali and Bhojpuri versions respectively.

Surya, who has an immense fan following down south, will be making his debut on small screen with the new show.
